Andrade Claims Strawweight Title

By far the biggest result at UFC 237 was Jessica Andrade becoming the new Strawweight champion. The Brazilian claimed the title in front of her home fans against a valiant foe in Rose Namajunas. Despite an earlier knockdown by Namajunas, Andrade had the last laugh with a stunning 2nd round KO.

She also took home an extra $100,000 for her troubles after claiming Fight of the Night honors. Andrade now moves to a very strong 20-6 in her MMA career, going 11-4 in the UFC. It’ll be very interesting to see what comes next for her in the Strawweight division.

Cannonier Walks the Walk

All of last week, we’d been bringing you stories about how vocal Jared Cannonier had been about beating Anderson Silva. He backed up every single one of those on Saturday with a unique first round KO. This was probably his most high-profile win and should do wonders for his stock going forward.

Cannonier delivered a thundering inside leg kick near the end of the first that caused Silva’s leg to buckle. It certainly wasn’t the ideal return home for the Brazilian veteran, who still has at least 2 more fights left on his UFC deal.

Volkanovski Set for Title Shot

Australian Alex Volkanovski certainly turned some heads with his dominant win over Aldo on Saturday. Many UFC fans and pundits alike expected a relatively standard win for Aldo, however the outcome couldn’t have been anything different.

Volkanovski threw significantly more punches than Aldo and all 3 judges scored the contest 30-27. The Australian now moves to 20-1 for his career, including an impressive 7-0 in the UFC. He is considered by most to be next in line for a Featherweight title shot, which would be great as the Co-Main for the Whittaker vs Adesanya fight.
